Important Guidance
As of the 1st of September 2023, the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) – the regulatory body for all vets in the UK are introducing new guidance on prescribing prescription-only medicines.
The guidance is an important step towards ensuring responsible use of veterinary drugs.
The new guidance requires that a physical examination by a vet has to be performed every time antibiotics, a product that may contain an antibiotic, antifungals and antivirals are required for your animal. This also includes new guidance on flea/worm/tick treatment and the need for a examination when you or the vet decides in a change to products used.
These guidelines could result in increased consultations/examinations than you are currently used to.
The full guidance and further information can be found on:
https://www.rcvs.org.uk/…/advi…/under-care-new-guidance/
What this means in practice is that:
– Your animal will continue to need a clinical exam before we can dispense ANY antibiotics, antifungals, or antivirals.
– Your animal will need a clinical exam if you/we want to change the anti parasitic treatment (typically flea, tick and worm) that they receive or if it has been longer than 12 months since a veterinary surgeon has examined your pet for this reason, for example at their annual booster.
– For all other long-term treatment we still require that the animal is seen every 3 months as per our practice policy.
If you have any questions or concerns about the new guidance, RCVS can be contacted on: 020 7202 0789 or advice@rcvs.org.uk.
We would ask you to please remember we are a zero-tolerance on abuse at Croft, we will not tolerate any abuse directed at our employees.
These new rules are made by the RCVS, and we are required to follow these guidelines.
We really appreciate your patience and understanding during these changes.
